IAPHS Welcomes Newly Elected Leaders

The results are in! IAPHS congratulates the winners of the election for new 2018 leadership roles:

Our new President-Elect, Ana Diez Roux, brings a wealth of population health and leadership expertise to IAPHS. Currently Dean of the Dornsife School of Public Health, Drexel University, Ana is internationally known for her work on social determinants of population health and neighborhood effects on health. Her work spans an extensive range of topics, including health disparities, environmental health effects, urban health, psychosocial factors in health, cardiovascular disease epidemiology, the use of multilevel methods, and, most recently, social environment-gene interactions and the use of complex systems approaches in population health. She has led interdisciplinary research and training programs in population health in the US and (collaboratively) in Latin America and has served in various academic leadership roles. She is an elected member of the American Epidemiological Society, the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research, and the National Academy of Medicine.

Ana will serve as IAPHS’s President-Elect in 2018, our President in 2019, and our Past President in 2020. We spoke to her recently about her future role in IAPHS. “IAPHS fills a unique space among scientific organizations devoted to population and health science, and I’m looking forward to helping it become an effective force in advancing population health science and bridging science and policy. I’m excited to be joining the outstanding leaders who have done so much already to set this course.”

Four new members will join the IAPHS Board in January 2018. Three of these, Allison Aiello, James Broesch, and Sanne Magnan, will serve three-year terms.* Our new Student Board Member, Allen Mallory, will serve a two-year term.

Allison leads the Social Epidemiology Program at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and has a prolific record of research that spans the sociological and biological sciences. She has also been named co-chair, with Bob Hummer, of the Program Committee for the IAPHS 2018 Conference.

James brings a unique combination of talents to the Board – a background of studying the transmission of culture and its impact on health and a deep commitment to health policy and improvement in his work as Director of Strategy and Public Health Planning at Vancouver Coastal Health in British Columbia, Canada.

Sanne, who formerly served as President and CEO of the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement and Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Health, currently co-chairs the Roundtable on Population Health Improvement of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.

Allen is a second year Ph.D. student in the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences and a NICHD Predoctoral Trainee at the Population Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin.

Our new leaders include individuals spanning medicine, epidemiology, anthropology and human development and who work in research and policy settings. This (intentional) diversity ensures that IAPHS will continue to pursue its commitment to advancing interdisciplinary population health science and making our science count.

IAPHS is deeply grateful to all those who contributed to a successful election process:
• All of the candidates, including also Lisa Berkman, Jason Houle, Gina Lovasi, Josh Sharfstein, and Maayan Simckes. The success of IAPHS depends on highly talented individuals like these to engage in our election process.
• The Nominations Committee, led by Sarah Stoddard and also including Marc Gourevitch and Yonette Thomas.
• The many members who cast their ballots to choose our new leaders: 72% of our membership voted, an excellent record.

* Josh Sharfstein withdrew his candidacy towards the end of the election.
