2025 –University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute/County Health Rankings & Roadmaps
UWPHI’s County Health Rankings & Roadmaps team is honored to receive the IAPHS Ida B. Wells Public Engagement Award. Ms. Wells’ groundbreaking statistical analysis and narrative change work aimed at uncovering the prevalence and impact of lynching, coupled with her unflinching social and political activism, serves as a beacon for all who are working toward a world where we value each other. Her fearless use of public reporting to build awareness and organize for action against structural racism and sexism inspires us to redouble our commitment to health equity.
2024 – Reginald Tucker-Seeley, Robin Wright-Jones, Darrell Hudson
Across the prostate cancer continuum from prevention to end-of-life care, Black men have worse outcomes compared to White men. Specifically, Black men are more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer, present at an earlier age, are likely to have more advanced disease at diagnosis, and have suboptimal outcomes to standard treatments. Therefore, ensuring timely diagnosis for this population and equitable treatment following diagnosis is critical to reducing the disparities experienced by Black men at risk for prostate cancer. 2023 – Those Nerdy Girls
Those Nerdy Girls came together in a moment of crisis in March 2020. As the creators of Dear Pandemic, we filled the early information void and translated emerging COVID-19 science first for our family & friends, and then a much larger public audience via our social media platforms. It was no accident that many of our founding members were trained population health scientists who could synthesize information across many disciplines and methodologies. Read more

2020 – Houston Area Urban League
The Sunnyside Strong collaboration is a community-engaged research project in Houston, Texas. The project, supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Interdisciplinary Research Leaders program and led by Felicia Jackson, Family Support Services Manager at the Houston Area Urban League, Rachel Kimbro, PhD, a sociologist at Rice University, and Quianta Moore, MD, JD and a Fellow in Child Health Policy at the Baker Institute for Public Policy. 2019 – William Story and The Congolese Health Partnership
The Congolese Health Partnership (CHP)—a collaboration between the College of Public Health at the University of Iowa, the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC), and leaders in the Congolese community—was launched in January 2017 in Johnson County, Iowa. The CHP was established based on the growing number of Congolese refugees settling in Johnson County in the past decade (now over 1,500) and the health care obstacles that these families face on a daily basis, including transportation, language, cultural differences, and difficulty navigating a complex health care system.
