Who are we? A look at IAPHS members – so far

Since launching our membership drive September 19, 2016, 135 individuals and 7 organizations have joined IAPHS as members.  Who are we?

Our individual members are drawn from 26 different disciplines and professions.

• Social scientists are the largest category, comprising just over half of our members. The social scientists among us hail from eleven distinct disciplines, with sociology the most heavily represented.
• About a third of our members come from Public Health disciplines, with Epidemiology the most widely represented.
• 13% come from professional disciplines such as medicine, nursing, education, and social work.

Most of our members are associated with universities, although some of our university-based members work in applied contexts such as the County Health Rankings and Roadmaps project at the University of Wisconsin.  The 13 members not based in universities hold a variety of positions in government, private research firms, foundations, and health care organizations.

Thirty percent of our members hail from the Midwest, 27% from the South, and about 20% each from the Northeast and the West.  We have four members who are located outside the US.

Seven organizations have joined as institutions, gaining benefits such as free student memberships and conference registrations (read more here).  They include:

• Evidence for Action, an RWJF- funded program at the University of California, San Francisco
• Dell Medical School/Population Health, University of Texas, Austin
• Population Research Center, University of Texas, Austin
• Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology, University of Washington
• Population Health Institute, University of Wisconsin
• Department of Epidemiology, University of Washington
• Department of Population Health, NYU School of Medicine
