A Message from IAPHS Leadership
IAPHS Leadership
Here we share a message from IAPHS leadership reaffirming our commitment to our purpose and announcing a monthly series of Town Halls. Details on the next Town Hall are coming soon.
Dear IAPHS community,
At a time when population health science faces extraordinary challenges, IAPHS leadership reaffirms our commitment to you and to our organization’s purpose, mission, and objectives. We want to engage with you in community building and action planning over the coming months.
The purpose of IAPHS is to foster scientific innovation and discovery to improve the health of populations and reduce health disparities.
We remain steadfast in this purpose, the achievement of which requires data, funding, and a workforce whose backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives reflect the diverse communities and populations our research and practice serve.
The mission of IAPHS is to provide a forum that will connect population health scientists across disciplines and sectors, advance the development of population health science, and promote its application.
To further this mission, IAPHS leadership is developing a monthly series of Town Halls to strategize ways that IAPHS can provide resources and collaborative spaces to protect and advance interdisciplinary population health science.
Our first virtual Town Hall, “Community Update and Action Planning” was on March 6, 2025.
During the Town Hall, we first heard from Heather Pierce, JD, Senior Director of Science Policy and Regulatory Counsel at the Association of American Medical Colleges who is helping lead national efforts to protect research funding and the scientific enterprise.
IAPHS leadership wants to hear from you during these Town Halls. We are seeking ideas for future programming that will meet our organization’s objectives to:
- Advance population health science
- Improve population health by promoting the communication and application of science
- Support population health scientists in their careers
We ask that you come prepared to discuss (or submit in advance on the registration form) your ideas about future Town Hall topics, speakers, and specific actions outside of direct advocacy that IAPHS could take to support you, your science, and our field. We also invite you to submit in advance any questions you might have for us. Some ideas from the IAPHS Board of Directors for future Town Halls include protecting and accessing population health data, seeking alternative sources of funding, and communicating our science when our words raise red flags.
These are extraordinary times and meeting the moment calls for extraordinary solidarity and collaboration. IAPHS leadership is eager to engage with and learn from you over the coming months to support all you do to improve the health of populations.
Together,
Philip M. Alberti, President
Jennifer Karas Montez, President-Elect
Magdalena Cerda, Past President
