Operationalizing Life Expectancy Gaps as a Population and Community Health Equity Metric

Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at 8:30AM – 12:30PM EDT

Session Chair(s):

  • Anne Vierse, New York University School of Medicine
  • Isabel Nelson, New York University School of Medicine

Workshop Focus: This interactive workshop will engage attendees in understanding and operationalizing within-city life expectancy gaps (LEGs) as a population health and health equity metric that can advance local efforts to reduce gaps between neighborhoods with the lowest and highest average life expectancy (ALE). To start, we will briefly guide participants through a recent example of how we operationalized and examined within-city LEGs using a sample of 875 cities from the City Health Dashboard (CHDB). Advancing Equity and Inclusion in Research Using Community-Engaged Approaches

Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at 8:30AM – 12:30PM EDT

Session Chair(s):

  • Rachel Bergmans, University of Michigan

Workshop Focus: There is increasing recognition that diversity, equity, and inclusion should be prioritized in research, and that anti-racist research is needed to address racial health inequities. Community-engaged approaches provide one tool for achieving these goals. However, few researchers are well equipped to implement community-engaged approaches and do not know where to start. The overarching goal of this workshop is to provide participants with tools and strategies that they can implement within their research to advance equity and inclusion.Read more

AFTERNOON SESSION

Studying Mortality using Harmonized National Health Interview Survey Linked Mortality File Data (NHIS-LMF) from IPUMS

Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at 1:00PM – 5:00PM EDT

Session Chair(s):

  • Julia A. Rivera Drew, University of Minnesota
  • Andrew Fenelon, University of Minnesota
  •

Workshop Focus: IPUMS provides free US and International census and survey data integrated across time and space. IPUMS data users can create customized data files through the online interface and download these files for use in their preferred statistical package. By reducing the barriers to accessing rich data sources, IPUMS allows researchers to leverage publicly available datasets to answer a broad range of topics.Read more

An Interactive Introduction to R Spatial Packages: Incorporating Historic Sociodemographic Data from the US Census and Population Life Expectancy in Static and Time-Varying Animated Maps

Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at 1:00PM – 5:00PM EDT

Session Chair(s):

  • Stephen Uong, Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health
  • Christina Mehranbod, Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health

Workshop Focus: Social determinants of health vary by place, and understanding their geographic patterns is important for a deeper understanding of the impacts of the socio-contextual environment on population life expectancy and health. Conducting spatial epidemiological analyses in R allows us to understand the distribution and determinants of disease in a streamlined and reproducible way, aiding in the development of targeted interventions to improve population health. Geographic data can be downloaded manually and individually from various websites, and popular software such as ArcGIS and QGIS offer ways to interactively map these geographic data. Read more

Innovative Research Methods and Approaches to improve Community Health and Population Sciences Research

Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at 1:00PM – 5:00PM EDT

Session Chair(s):

  • Priscah Mujuru, NIH-National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities
  • Gniesha Dinwiddie, NIH-National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities

Workshop Focus: Over the past few years, many of the gains made in identifying, mitigating and reducing health disparities have stagnated and, in some cases, have diminished.  When considering life expectancy, which is a reliable measure for the health of a population, the United States experienced its largest drop in recent history, with the largest decreases among racial and ethnic minority populations. In tandem with this year’s theme on understanding social drivers of health and closing the gap in life expectancy in the US, this workshop will focus on tools to mitigate research health disparities. National Institutes of Health (NIH) supports research to address and mitigate health disparities using innovative tools to address Social Determinants of Health Collection (SDOH) that contribute to declining life expectancy.Read more

Trauma-Informed Interviewing for Population Health Research

Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at 1:00PM – 5:00PM EDT

Session Chair(s):

  • Jenny Leigh, New York University

Workshop Focus: As population health research often touches on sensitive and personal topics such as violence, discrimination, and inequality, it is particularly crucial that researchers be prepared to navigate an interview experience through a trauma-informed lens. This workshop offers an introduction to the practice of trauma-informed interviewing for researchers and other health professionals who draw upon interviewing in their work. Trauma-informed interviewing runs through the entire process of an interview project, from the design of the project to the writing of interview questions and into the interview dynamic itself.
